The Science of NEAT Movement

NEAT (Non-Exercise-Activity-Thermogenesis)

Non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT) is the energy expended for everything we do that is not sleeping, eating or sports-like exercise. It ranges from the energy expended walking to work, typing, performing yard work, undertaking agricultural tasks and fidgeting…In simple terms, it represents any activity you do around the office or house that is not associated to specific times that are booked for true physical exercises (i.e sports, gym, yoga, etc.)

NEAT could be a critical component in how we maintain our body weight and/or develop obesity or lose weight.

NEAT/NEPA (Non-Exercise-Physical-Activity) can account for as little as 15% of energy expenditure in the very sedentary and up to 50% in very active individuals.

NEAT_graphFor example: if a person has a BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) of around 1,000 calories they’ll burn about 150 calories digesting the food they eat each day. They may also burn anywhere from 150 (low NEAT) to 500 (high NEAT) calories more per day depending on whether they have engaged in walking, active work breaks, taking the stairs, etc.

HIGH NEAT expenditure will be created in a day full of low intensity activities: walking around, shopping, cleaning, up and down stairs, daily shores, etc.

LOW NEAT expenditure is causing serious health issues in today’s workforce over time: spending each workday day sitting at a desk, then going home to sit on the couch.
